Dear SABR partners and stakeholders

We are fast approaching the Festive Season and the end of the year and we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the support we received during the implementation of our change management strategy, as communicated in October. As with all change, there were a few hiccups along the way, but the need for change has generally been well understood and supported.

Since babies do not “stop being born” because it’s Christmas, we will never shut down operations over the Festive Season. However, after a long and busy year, our office staff will be taking some well-deserved leave and, as such, we will be operating with a skeleton staff. It is, therefore, important that we remind you of some key information regarding our services – not only for this time of year, but in general – and we would appreciate it if you, as the recipient of our newsletter, would communicate this to your colleagues and staff.

Orders and Deliveries
We have found that an increasing number of orders are being placed after our cut-off time, putting babies at risk of running out of milk, and our staff under pressure to try and arrange an urgent delivery, so please remember that:

  • To meet the courier collection deadline, the SABR cut-off time for orders is 9:00am, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays);
  • All in-patient orders must be placed by hospital staff (not the parents), and must be confirmed with our Head Office before the parents are asked to pay because all orders are stock dependent;
  • Since we make use of a courier service, we have no control over delivery rates and times and, as such, reserve the right to a 24-hour turnaround time on orders. So please order in time to prevent babies from going hungry:
    • Local deliveries only take place between 2:00 and 5:00 in the afternoon;
    • Deliveries to areas outside the greater Johannesburg area are often delivered only the day after the order was placed;
    • Deliveries to areas outside the greater Gauteng area can take 2 – 3 days to deliver after an order was placed.
  • All deliveries on weekends, public holidays and for emergencies are subject to a delivery surcharge which will be for the parents’ account and, as such, should be reserved for true emergencies (e.g. a baby being born on a public holiday or over a weekend) – follow up orders for patients already receiving DBM should be placed Monday to Thursday;
  • We do not handle cash at our offices and all payments must be made via EFT or direct deposit;
  • Hospitals are welcome to send a hospital to for collections.

Out-Patient / Full-Term Programme
As a result of recent guideline changes concerning the storage of expressed breastmilk, we are excited to inform you that we are extending our recipient guidelines to bigger babies and out-patients. This programme will use a different pool of breastmilk (thus will not be at the expense of our premature recipients) and is aimed at increasing breastfeeding in South Africa.

It could almost be considered a “bridging service” for breastfeeding mothers who might be battling with supply or have to interrupt breastfeeding for a short time because of illness or the use of medication contra-indicated for breastfeeding. Again, all orders are stock dependent and at the discretion of our Medical Advisory Board.

In closing we would like to wish you all well for the Festive Season. We would once again like to thank you for your support and understanding throughout the year, and look forward to working with you in 2017.
